How to Unlock a PDF and Remove Password Protection Free

Forgot your PDF password or need to edit a locked PDF? Learn how to unlock a PDF and remove password protection online for free — no software needed.

A password-protected PDF can block you from printing, copying text, or even opening the file. If you have the password but want to remove the restriction permanently, here's how to unlock a PDF for free in seconds.

How to remove a PDF password online for free

PDFSpot's Unlock PDF tool removes the password from any protected PDF — no software to install, no account needed.

  1. 1Go to the Unlock PDF tool above.
  2. 2Upload your password-protected PDF file.
  3. 3Enter the current PDF password in the password field.
  4. 4Click Unlock PDF and download the unlocked, unrestricted copy.

Two types of PDF passwords — which one do you have?

PDFs can have two different kinds of password protection:

Open password (user password) — Required to open and view the file. Without it, the PDF cannot be read at all.

Permissions password (owner password) — The file opens normally but editing, printing, or copying is restricted. You may not even know this password exists, as it is set silently by the document creator.

PDFSpot can remove both types of protection — you just need to know the open password (if one exists) to upload and process the file.

What if I forgot the PDF password?

If you created the PDF yourself, check your password manager or the email where you originally sent it. If someone else created the PDF and sent it to you, contact them — they can either tell you the password or send you an unlocked version.

If you genuinely cannot remember the password for a PDF you own, there are paid password recovery tools that attempt to brute-force the password, but this can take hours or days depending on password complexity. PDFSpot cannot recover unknown passwords — you must know the password to unlock the file.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Unlocking a PDF you own or have been legitimately given access to is legal in most jurisdictions. The ethical and legal rule is simple: if you have the password and the right to access the document, removing the password for personal convenience is fine.

Do not use PDF unlocking tools to bypass copy protection on purchased e-books, copyrighted materials, or documents you were not authorized to access.

How to re-protect a PDF after unlocking

If you unlocked a PDF to edit it and want to re-apply password protection after making changes, use the Protect PDF tool. You can set a new password with 256-bit AES encryption — the strongest PDF protection standard available.

Are my files safe when I upload them?

PDFSpot processes your PDF on a secure server using an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Your file and password are never stored permanently — all uploaded files are automatically deleted after 1 hour. We never read, share, or analyse the contents of your documents.
