Why PDFs don't show a word count

A PDF is a fixed layout format — it stores where each character is drawn on the page, not a flowing document like a Word file. Because there is no live "document model" behind it, PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview and Chrome don't display a running word count the way Microsoft Word does. To count the words you first have to pull the text back out of the PDF, then count it.

The fastest way: count words in a PDF online (free)

The quickest method is to upload the PDF to a free online word-count tool. It extracts all the text from every page and returns the total word count, character count and page count — no software, no account, and nothing is stored. Method 2: copy the text into a word counter

If you only need a rough number and the PDF is short, you can open it in any reader, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select all text, copy it, and paste it into a plain word counter. This works for simple documents but breaks down on multi-column layouts, tables, and headers/footers, where the copied text order gets scrambled. For anything longer than a page or two, a dedicated PDF word counter is far more reliable.

Method 3: convert the PDF to Word first

If you also want to edit the document, convert the PDF to an editable Word (.docx) file. Once it is open in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, the live word count appears at the bottom of the window and updates as you edit. This is the best route when the word count is only one part of a larger editing job.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scanned PDF is really a set of images — there is no text layer to extract, so a word counter will return zero. To count words in a scanned document, first run it through OCR (Optical Character Recognition), which adds a real, searchable text layer. After OCR, the PDF word counter will read it correctly.

Why the count can differ from the original Word file

PDF text extraction doesn't always join and split words exactly the way the authoring app did — hyphenated line breaks, ligatures (fi, fl), and complex layouts can shift the count slightly. Expect the PDF word count to be within about 2% of the original Word document's count. For most purposes — translation quotes, length checks, billing estimates — that is more than accurate enough.
