JPG vs PNG — when to use each format

Choosing the right image format matters for quality, file size, and compatibility:

JPG (JPEG) — Best for photographs and images with many colours. Uses lossy compression, so file sizes are small but quality is slightly reduced each time you save. Does not support transparency.

PNG — Best for screenshots, logos, graphics, and images that need a transparent background. Uses lossless compression — quality never degrades on re-save. Files are larger than JPG.

WebP — Google's modern format. Smaller than both JPG and PNG at similar quality. Ideal for websites. Not supported by all older software.

SVG — Scalable vector format for logos and icons. Resolution-independent — looks sharp at any size. Only suitable for vector artwork, not photographs.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

The most common reason to convert JPG to PNG is transparency. If you need to remove the background from an image, PNG supports transparent pixels — JPG does not. Other reasons include:

Preserving quality for further editing — PNG is lossless, so re-saving does not degrade the image.

Screenshots — PNG is the standard format for screenshots because text and sharp edges stay crisp.

Logos — PNG logos on websites look sharper and can have transparent backgrounds.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG files are often 3–5x larger than JPG. If you're uploading images to a website, social media, or email, converting PNG to JPG significantly reduces file size — which means faster loading and smaller attachments. For photographs and images without transparent backgrounds, the quality difference is invisible to the naked eye.

What about WebP conversion?

WebP is increasingly used by modern websites because it's 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all support WebP. However, some older apps and social media platforms still don't. If you receive a WebP image and can't open it, convert it to JPG or PNG with PDFSpot's Image Converter.

SVG to PNG conversion

SVG is a vector format — it's infinitely scalable but not supported everywhere. Converting SVG to PNG creates a fixed-resolution raster image that works in any context: documents, presentations, social media, messaging apps. PDFSpot renders the SVG at high resolution before converting to ensure sharp output.
